Nestled in a valley located outside of Vulcan, AB, lies a piece of Alberta history in the form of Twin Valley Farms. Homesteaded in 1943, the farm began on 640 acres of bare land. In 1946, 640 acres, which included a house and a barn, was purchased by Ray and Wilma Flitton, and Twin Valley Farms was born.
Although the family did pause farming in the 70’s to pursue other interests, they found themselves back at the farm to resurrect it into what it once was. Ran by Gary Flitton, the farm found some challenges during the 1980’s before seeing new growth with the arrival of the 90’s and focused business planning.
With the help of Gary’s sons, Noel and Ryan, along with his son-in-law Troy, the farm is flourishing today with just under 14,000 acres of crop land and a small cow herd.
“Before the reservoir was filled, we had lands down in the river valley. There were also two valleys – one that carried Mosquito Creek and the other that came all the way from Highwood – and where those two intersected is where our land was. So, it was called Twin Valley Farms,” said Ryan.
Currently, the farm rotates through different crops such as canola, field peas, lentils, CPS wheat, malt barley, and faba beans. They also have a mixed herd of cattle consisting of 95 head, although they’re more of a hobby herd than operational.
With almost 14,000 acres comes an impressive fleet of equipment, something Twin Valley Farms has. With Case IH 620 Quadtracs, Bourgault Air Drills, a Case IH Patriot 4440 sprayer, Case IH 8250 combines, two older 4WD tractors, and their own irrigation system, the farm knows how to get things done efficiently every year.
Working with RME for a number of years, Ryan said it’s been great working with the High River branch. On the Sales side, working primarily with RME Ag Equipment Sales Consultant Gerhard Jansen Van Vurren, Ryan said it’s not abnormal to see Gerhard lending a helping hand during the busy seasons.
“He used to be a mechanic before he became a sales guy and he’s knowledgeable. He’s a great person.”
While discussing RME’s Service department, Ryan said RME is always available to assist.
“It doesn’t happen often but when it does, they have your back when something goes down. If one of our combines goes down, they’re really good about getting us a demo or a loaner combine to keep us going.”
RME is proud to be able to keep operations like Twin Valley Farms up and running so they can have a successful season. By doing , RME ensures their equipment stays up to date with the latest technology and stays mechanically sound so they can get the job done right and on time.
