Located roughly an hour away from RME Yorkton and nestled between a break in Echo Lake lies the beautiful town of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK. With it’s stunning rolling hills and picturesque landscape, this little town has a population of roughly 1,900 people but is also home to many farming families surrounding the area. One particular farming operation has called Fort Qu’Appelle home for four generations and continues thriving, despite jumping over some hurdles throughout the years.
Deer Creek Farms began with only a few acres of land but has grown substantially throughout the generations and currently sits at 30,000 acres. Primarily run by Ryan and Dalton Huber, the farm operation strictly grows wheat and canola but has explored other farming ventures in the past.
“My Grandpa started out with about four quarters of land when my Dad was born. He then ventured into cattle as everyone did back then. At one point, my Dad had 400 head of cattle and got into showing them as he got older, but was still buying land at the same time and farming grain,” said Dalton Huber.
It was in 2003, just months before BSE hit the agricultural industry, that Deer Creek Farms got out of the cattle industry and moved into strictly grain.
“Around 2003, we had about 4000 acres that we were farming. By 2009, we were sitting at 15,000 acres and now we’re farming almost 30,000 acres.”
Previously, Deer Creek Farms grew different crops such as peas, oats, wheat, and canola, however, after five years of rough weather, it was determined the hardiest crops were wheat and canola and that’s what the farm has ran with ever since.
Currently, their fleet consists of four Case IH 580 Quadtracs, three Bourgault air seeders, ten New Holland combines, a couple of New Holland front boom Sprayers, and an airplane they use for their fungicide spraying.
According to Dalton, the farm became Case IH red back in 2018 when RME Yorkton’s former Regional Sales Manager Blake Herperger paid Deer Creek Farms a visit and the rest is history.
“It was back in 2018 when Blake convinced me to buy a used tractor from Alberta and since then, we’ve bought 15 tractors from RME. Now we’ve bought six sets of Bourgault air seeders and drills through Blake.”
Since then, Blake has become a close friend of the family, ensuring they have everything they need from RME in order to have successful seasons and optimally running equipment.
“Blake’s very good at what he did, he’s a good friend of mine. He and Rod (Fazakas) came out and drove some combines for us last year and they helped out a little bit,” said Dalton.
In terms of working with RME Yorkton over the years, Dalton said he has no complaints and has enjoyed working with everyone from the branch from each department.
“Anytime there has been an issue, whether it’s a warranty issue or a machine breaks, there’s been no issues with the staff; everyone has been excellent to deal with.”
RME takes great pride in being able to do and work alongside the Huber family to provide top of the line Parts and Service and Sales support when they need it most. We look forward to continuing to provide Deer Creek Farms with excellent customer service for years to come.
